Encourage personal reading during the summer months using our free printable summer reading BINGO sheets!

The Importance of Summer Reading

Summer is an important time for kids.

Not only are these 3 months a great time for them to get outside and play, but it is also the primary period where learning regressions take place.

Ever heard of the ‘summer slide’?

This is why encouraging your kids to read and learn over the summer months is essential!

As a mom of 3 kiddos who love to read, we thankfully don’t struggle much with reading regression in our home.

However, as a mom whose former childhood self loathed to read, I totally get this.

I struggled with school and reading in general as a child, but I had no one to advocate for me and definitely no one to teach me how to read for fun.

So, naturally, when my kiddos started reading, I was incredibly thankful they had a teacher who not only taught them how to read but also taught them how to have a love for reading.

This inspired me to read more often and search for that same joy they experienced with every turn of a page.

Then, when my youngest (who has always been homeschooled) was ready, I was finally equipped to do the same for her!

From summer reading challenges to summer reading bingo, leaning on simple reading activities is a must for reluctant readers!

Summer Reading Bingo Sheets

When I first decided to create these summer reading BINGO sheets, I knew I wanted to give you guys a few different options to choose from.

First, I chose to create 2 colored sheets (for those who like to print in color, of course).

A blue version and a pink.

Color Summer Reading Bingo Sheets

These color schemes match some of our previous summer printables, such as our before-electronics checklist.

Plus, they would make a great addition to our summer reading challenge!

Then, of course, I had to create a simple grey-scale version for those who tend to print in black-and-white or simply don’t like the above color options.

Gray Summer Reading BINGO Sheets

That said, this grey and white version is perfect for adding embellishments or coloring!

Simply encourage kids to make it their own by coloring in the BINGO header leaders.

While there may be 3 different color options to choose from, it’s important to note that these BINGO sheets are all identical activity-wise.

I did this simply because these BINGO sheets are not meant to be used like a traditional BINGO competition, but instead as a personal reading goals sheet.

Ok, so I lied. I thought I made 3 different colors, but I actually made 4! So, this means you get a bonus green BINGO sheet as well! You’re welcome.

BINGO Reward Ideas

While encouraging reading over the summer months and printing off our summer reading BINGO sheets might be enough for some kiddos, others may need an extra push.

That is where reading rewards come into play.

Try including some of these fun rewards in your summer reading BINGO experience!

  • New bookmark
  • New read-aloud book
  • Trip to the library
  • Magazine subscription
  • Non-reader activity book
  • Movie Night (based on a book)

Whether you create a treasure box full of smaller goodies or lean towards one big goal for the summer, you can easily reward the kiddos for a job well done!

Combine these BINGO cards with our free printable reward tickets for even more reward opportunities.

Life & Homeschool Author

Hey guys! I’m Mary, homeschool mom of 3 amazing kiddos.

I’m so excited that you decided to check out my little corner of the world!

If you have been following our journey for any length of time, you already know that I’m obsessed with coffee, organization, and all things simple.

I’m also a huge dog lover and introvert 💗

My homeschool style is very eclectic.

I enjoy a solid mixture of structure and free range. I set goals for myself and my children each week, but I put no pressure on perfection.

We use a wide variety of curriculum in our home.

Some of our current favorites are The Good and the Beautiful, Life of Fred, Beautiful Feet Books, and Lifepac.

While my kids do spend a good amount of time learning at desks, they also spend countless hours exploring their creativity and practicing a little independence.

I love mountains, rainy days, and sitting by the campfire.

Our family recently relocated to the PNW and we have been enjoying finding new nature spots to explore together 🙌🏼

I can’t wait to connect and share all the things I’ve learned on our new journey!

Just a Note…

Thanks for checking out the kid activities portion of the blog!

Typically summer is the most productive time for my blog. However, our family is currently living in temporary housing and we do not see an end in sight (thank you housing marking 😪) — meaning my workspace & supplies to produce quality content it extremely limited.

I am still working, but it’s nothing like normal.

As always, we appreciate your patience!
