Kickstart your children’s creativity with these uniquely fun, creative kid activities!
Raising Creative Kids
Raising creative kiddos who love to craft and create was always a goal of mine.
That said, I now have 3 kiddos (2 of whom are grown) who all consider themselves to be uncreative because crafting isn’t really their thing.
To be completely honest, this hurts my mom-heart just a bit.
I crafted and created with my kiddos their entire childhood, and just because they now choose to express their creativity in other ways doesn’t mean they aren’t creative.
Others may look at my children without seeing just how creative they truly are, but it’s there.
Just like it’s there in all of us.

However, true creativity doesn’t always showcase itself in the same form.
My kids may not express their creativity in the most traditional ways, such as crafting or painting, but they are all incredibly creative.
All that said, maybe I’m a little biased, but I truly believe all humans can be creative — it’s just up to us to take the time to recognize it.
Different Forms of Creativity
When we think of creativity, we typically think of those incredible people who can create something magnificent from nothing in a matter of minutes.
Like someone who can paint a masterpiece with just a handful of paints, a brush, and a canvas.
Am I right or am I right?
However, there are multiple types of creativity, resulting in creative humans who are all around us.

For example, my oldest can build the most amazing things out of LEGO, and he’s been that way since he was 5.
My middle kid is a born leader who can come up with resourceful solutions that no one else would ever think of.
And my youngest, well, she’s a firecracker with many interests, but her giving heart is where her true creativity lies.
All that said, there are no accomplished artists in my home, no masterpiece makers, and no symphony writers.
However, we all have our creative moments where we think outside the box or do something that no one else expects, and that deserves a little appreciation, too, you guys!

Creative Art Activities for Kids
When it comes to creative kid art activities, it’s important to encourage kids to think outside the box as much as possible.
While holiday creations and simple paper crafts can be both fun and easy, utilizing unique materials and art methods is what it’s all about, you guys!

Encourage kiddos to try one of these clever art ideas to get those creative juices flowing.
- Make art projects out of old items
- Create art using unique materials
- Use different art mediums
- Create a personalized vision board
- Mix outdoor fun with crafting
Honestly, one of my kids’ favorite creative art pastimes was to create blind drawings, where one child would name an item to draw and another child would draw it blindfolded.
There were even a number of times we did this activity as a family, and it was just really fun, you guys!
All that said, the projects and ideas above are just a few starter ideas.
Kids can also showcase their creativity through handprint crafts and other unique nature craft ideas.
Once children have a starting point, they can let their true creativity soar when they come up with their own unique ideas.
A special thanks to Craft Your Happy Place and Mommy Evolution for sharing some of their creative art ideas with us!
Creative Writing Activities for Kids
While creating art is likely the most well-known version of creativity, writing can be just as imaginative, you guys!
For example, some of the most unique creative things I’ve experienced in my life have come in book, movie, song, or TV form.
All of those amazing things started with a little imagination and writing.
As a writer myself, I can appreciate just how much creativity it truly takes to create something written from nothing.
That said, I’m only a wee little content creator, and while I thoroughly enjoy making my art, I know that sometimes I need a little help from my friends.

So, if you have a writer in your midst and they need help dealing with their writer’s block, simply encourage them to try some of these creative writing ideas!
- Use writing prompts
- Write a story together
- Create personalized poetry
- Lean on unique writing exercises
Writing together was hands-down one of our favorite homeschool activities when my kiddos were little. We did a writing activity that I liked to call one-sentence story writing, and my kids would flip for it.
One person would start by writing a beginning sentence (typically, One upon a time…) in a notebook, and we simply passed said notebook around the table, each person filling in 1 sentence at a time.
We created some of the most unique stories, and it truly was a super fun activity that got my kids thinking and using their imaginations.
My kiddos have also thrived with writing through simple sentence dictation ideas and fun spelling word activities.
Creative Educational Activities for Kids
As a busy homeschool mom, leaning on educational activities has always been a must!
That said, not all educational activities can be fun and engaging.

Consider adding some of these ideas to your homeschool schedule to encourage kiddos to get creative in the kitchen, outside, or in the classroom.
- Experiment with science
- Play educational games
- Set up student debates
- Participate in historical activities
When my kiddos were little, cooking together was one of our absolute favorite ways to get creative as a family!
Cooking with my kids not only motivated them to learn new skills, but it also helped them express their creativity through food.
I can’t count the number of times my kiddos pretend to be a chef while throwing in extra ingredients that weren’t in the recipe.
They would be so proud of themselves when the end result was tasty, and it was darn cute, you guys!!
Gardening, while not an activity we participated in (brown thumb girl here), can be another educational way for children to unleash their ingenuity!
While any number of these can make awesome homeschool activities, you can also encourage children to stretch their creative wings through riddles and brainstorming, or through other planned-out activities they can loop through.
A special thanks to Living Life and Learning and Waco Mom for their creative additions!
Creative Freeplay and More
While we typically utilized the summer months, our mid-day looping schedule, or my youngest child’s quiet time routine, to focus on freeplay in the past, my kiddos are now grown, and I honestly don’t think about this one much anymore!

That said, these are some fun ideas to inspire a little free-time play creativity for little ones.
- Gather nature items for creating
- Pretend play with puppets or acting
- Create forts, obstacle courses, or games
- Make unique sensory activities
Honestly, when my kiddos were little, free play was when some of their most creative moments happened!
For example, my youngest was always a huge nature collector when she was little.
From gathering items to collect to creating adorable nature art.
Her creativity absolutely soared when we took a nature hunt outside.
My boys, however, now truly thrived when they could put their heads together to create a massive fort, new games to play, or an intense obstacle course!
So, encourage creative kid activities during free-play time as often as possible, you guys, and watch your kiddos flourish like you never have before!
